Making Air Quality Data Accessible
Clean Air Myanmar is a collaboration between Connect University and Phandeeyar, created to bring air quality information to the public. Dr. Kirt Page and his students recognized that Yangon's air pollution wasn't receiving the attention it deserved — largely because data simply wasn't available. This project changes that by displaying current Air Quality Index readings and offering resources to help everyone understand what's in the air we share.

In Yangon, as in many growing cities, the air carries a mixture of particles and gases that can influence health in ways both immediate and long-term. Clean Air Myanmar exists to close the gap between raw scientific data and everyday awareness, translating complex measurements into information that anyone can use to protect themselves and their families.
Particulate matter stands among the most concerning pollutants in urban environments. These tiny particles, measured in micrometers, come from sources such as vehicle exhaust, industrial emissions, and the burning of materials. The smallest of these particles can bypass the body's natural defenses, traveling deep into the lungs and even entering the bloodstream. Once inside, they can irritate sensitive tissues and contribute to a range of respiratory and cardiovascular concerns. Knowing the concentration of these particles in the air helps residents take sensible precautions on days when levels rise.
The Air Quality Index provides a simple framework for understanding complex pollution data. Rather than requiring expertise in atmospheric chemistry, the index distills multiple pollutants into a single number and color-coded category that is easy to read at a glance. Each range corresponds to a specific level of health concern, from good to hazardous. This system allows people to quickly assess whether conditions are safe for outdoor exercise, whether windows should remain closed, or whether sensitive groups such as children and the elderly need extra protection.
Ground-level ozone and gases like nitrogen dioxide, sulfur dioxide, and carbon monoxide also contribute to the overall air quality picture. These pollutants form through chemical reactions involving sunlight, vehicle emissions, and industrial activity. Even at moderate concentrations, they can irritate the eyes, nose, and throat, and may worsen existing respiratory conditions. Monitoring these gases alongside particulate matter gives a fuller understanding of the air we breathe, helping communities identify patterns and advocate for cleaner practices across the city.
